San Mateo Grand Jury Finds Red-Light Camera Increases Safety

Date March 13, 2009

SAN MATEO COUNTY, Calif. — A 2008-2009 San Mateo County Civil Grand Jury (Grand Jury) investigation found that the photo enforcement red light camera installed by Redwood City at the intersection of eastbound Whipple Avenue at Veterans Boulevard has served as an effective traffic safety device in its first six months of operation.

Based upon the data collected by the Redwood City Police Department of collisions resulting from motorists running red lights, the City Council of Redwood City approved the installation of a red light enforcement camera at one intersection under the exclusive control of Redwood City. The result was a drastic reduction of the number of collisions in the first six months of operation.

The 2008-2009 San Mateo County Civil Grand Jury has recommended that the City Council of Redwood City continue to move forward with the installation of photo enforcement red light cameras at the other intersections identified by the Redwood City Police Department as high risk for collisions caused by or contributed greatly by motorists failing to comply with the California Vehicle Code when the traffic light is changing to red.
