Tulare County Grand Jury: Inmate clothing draws inquiries

Grand Jury report cites complaints about fit, laundering, procedures

It can take days for Tulare County inmates to be assigned clothes that fit, the Tulare County Grand Jury found in a report claiming that some correctional officers are unfamiliar with the county's inmate-clothing policy.

The investigation came after one inmate complained of ill-fitting clothing and another said jackets issued to inmates are soiled from previous use. The Grand Jury report was published Saturday.

Internal reviews by the Tulare County Sheriff's Department and Health and Human Services Agency are under way, officials said. It's possible that the way clothes are handled and distributed to inmates will be changed, Capt. Robin Skiles said.

"But it's not jacket season," he said, "so it may take time to see exactly what we are dealing with."
