[Riverside County] Banning: Council threatens to evict chamber from city-owned building

The Banning City Council voted Tuesday night, May 10, to send notice to the Banning Chamber of Commerce to follow the recommendation of a civil grand jury or be evicted from the city-owned building it occupies.
A grand jury report released last month stated the chamber owes the city almost $16,000 in utility bills. The jury also states the chamber has failed to meet contractual obligations to add the city to the building's insurance policy and put up a $10,000 bond.
The vote came after more than an hour of debate, which included emotional exchanges with Mayor Art Welch defending himself against charges made by Councilman Don Peterson, who filed the complaint with the grand jury.
The city attorney will prepare a demand letter that will come before the council at its next meeting. If approved, the chamber will have 60 days to comply or face eviction.
