[Santa Cruz County] Letter: Read the grand jury report on threats in local schools

On April 11, the grand jury issued the report, “Threat Assessment in Our Public Schools: Committed to Keeping Our Children Safe,” a follow-up to last year’s threat assessment report. While local media focus was on a relatively minor recommendation we made, the key findings of the report were that the County Office of Education and County Sheriff’s Office produced a thorough and well-written threat assessment plan, created valuable resources for schools to use in threat situations, and demonstrated their commitment to keeping our children safe through training staff in the protocol they developed. We commend their response to the grand jury’s recommendations and, more importantly, their commitment to protecting our children from the threat of targeted school violence.
I encourage all interested individuals to read the report itself, rather than relying on the media’s packaging of the information.
