Fresno County Grand jury clears Caruthers schools

Caruthers Unified School District has not mishandled government funds used to help schools in low-income communities, the Fresno County grand jury reported today.

The grand jury investigated the Caruthers district in response to a citizen's contention that the district was misappropriating Quality Education Investment Act funds, the report said. The complaint alleged that the district was lax in monitoring use of the funds, and also engaged in questionable hiring practices.

The grand jury report said the district's administration was "judicious" in spending the funds and that the Fresno County Office of Education monitored the money appropriately. The grand jury also found no irregularities in the district's hiring practices.
