An investigation by the Santa Barbara County civil
grand jury has found several problems with the processing of parking citations,
according to new findings released Wednesday.
The process is currently utilized by the Santa
Barbara County Sheriff’s Office in collaboration with a private vendor.
A lag between the time the Sheriff’s Office
submits the citations to the vendor and the time the vendor posts the citations
online was identified as an area of concern, according to the report.
The vendor’s processing time affects the
public’s ability to make payments in a timely manner, the report said
Their review also found that incorrect late
fees are sometimes added and that citations have been incorrectly sent to
collections while invoice reconciliations are late.
Checks can be sent, but there is no option for
citizens to pay their citations in person or with cash, the report found.
The Sheriff’s Office has 60 days to respond to
the report.
The report, titled “Parking Citation Payment
Problems with the Sheriff’s Office,” includes five findings and recommendations
and can be viewed online at www.sbcgj.org.
