This Friday, as part of a protest of “concentration camps” across the country, a Lights for Liberty vigil is scheduled to take place at the Yuba County Jail in Marysville, the last remaining ICE detention facility in Northern California, according to the organization.
For people unable to travel to Marysville, a vigil is also being planned at Central Park in Davis from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, hosted by the Davis Phoenix Coalition.
“It is part of a nationwide action in which thousands will protest the inhuman conditions faced by migrants here,” according to Francesca Fitzgerald of the Lights of Liberty group. “At the Yuba detention facility where we will be holding a vigil, ICE detainees recently began a hunger strike in response to what a Yuba County grand jury described as ‘dungeon’ like conditions.
“In a letter, smuggled out of the facility, a detainee wrote; ‘We have an infestation of cockroaches in our beds and food; the cells have no water and we’re treated like criminals,'” Fitzgerald stated. “This is happening in our own backyard. At the border, children as young as 4 months are being taken from their parents, held in dangerous conditions, and treated abusively by people who are supposed to be looking after their well- being. The public often first learns of the abuses via leaks, only to have them denied by the administration, yet later confirmed by government agencies.”
NorCal Resist is hosting the event, and Indivisible Yolo is joining the coalition of co-hosts that includes Elk Grove United Church of Christ, diverse Jewish groups, Coalition of Labor Union Women, Showing Up for Racial Justice, and Safe Yolo.
Indivisible Yolo is a grassroots organization focused on civic engagement and education.
Yolo Resist recently co-hosted the July 2 “Close the Camps” rally with MoveOn in Davis, and are committed to drawing attention to and ending the inhumane detention of immigrants and asylum seekers.
