Calaveras County animal services responds to Grand Jury

Calaveras County Animal Services functions more efficiently in the Environmental Management Agency, rather than the Sheriff’s Office, according to responses to the Civil Grand Jury’s most recent report.
The Grand Jury recommended the Animal Services department should be transferred back to the county Sheriff’s Office, where it was until 2012.
The jury determined through interviews that Animal Services would have more enforcement capabilities under the jurisdiction of the Sheriff’s Office.
Brad Banner, administrator of the Environmental Management Agency, disagreed, saying the animal shelter has gone from being predominantly a “kill shelter” to one that prioritizes re-homing all adoptable animals, Banner stated.
