[Alameda County] Letter to the editor: Is Oakland rushing to close schools without public input?

Blog note: this article references a grand jury report.
The Oakland Unified School District has proposed to close Kaiser Elementary, one of the most ethnically and socioeconomically diverse schools in Oakland.
It is academically high achieving and serves students from every district. Truly a model school.
The district and board seem to be rushing to close schools without any public input or feasible plan to give the appearance of “action.” The Alameda County Grand Jury Report 2018-19 states, “OUSD consistently spends less on students and classroom needs and more (sometimes much more) on central staff, administrative programs, contracting and services” (p. 37). Their blatant financial mismanagement should alarm everyone.
The children of Oakland deserve better. The taxpayers deserve to have their tax dollars spent responsibly. If the board won’t hold the district accountable, the people of Oakland must.
