Bakersfield, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — The city of McFarland and the Kern County Fire Department could reach a new service agreement if the Kern County Board of Supervisors approves it Tuesday afternoon.
The proposed 18-month agreement would allow the KCFD to continue to provide fire protection to the city of McFarland via Station 33, according to a report prepared by Chief David Witt.
The agreement begins retroactive to July 1 and will last until Dec. 31, 2020 unless terminated.
The contract states that McFarland will pay the county more than $233,000 by the end of next year, while the county will retain more than $413,000 in interest as part of a settlement.
Over the past several years, the county had attempted to recover more than $680,000 for previous services provided. The city of McFarland, however, said that the city was not obligated to send back pay to the county because it wasn't explicitly instructed to do so in its contract, according to a grand jury report.
Supervisors will vote on the contract during their 2 p.m. meeting at 1115 Truxtun Ave. in downtown Bakersfield.
