SANTA CRUZ — If a proposed state law that would legalize marijuana passes muster in the November 2010 election, it would raise an estimated $7 million in tax revenues for Santa Cruz County and drastically reduce law enforcement and prosecutorial costs that go toward battling the drug, according to a report released Tuesday by the 2009-10 Santa Cruz County Grand Jury.
The study on the fiscal impact of the legalization of marijuana was one of eight subjects covered by the 19-member grand jury. The report also included the county public defender’s office and studies of the county’s residential treatment facilities, the jail system and the library system.
When the grand jury decided to do a study of the possible impacts of legalized marijuana, lawmakers had long been mulling such laws, but none of them had gained momentum.
