The county government's maintenance of public roads and government facilities face scrutiny in the annual report from the Amador County Civil Grand Jury released last week. The Grand Jury takes issue with the poor state of maintenance at various county facilities, such as the Jackson Library, the District Attorney’s Office, and other county buildings. The notes a number of needed improvements that have been done at county facilities such as accessibility under the Americans with Disabilities Act. The report also details the general poor state of the county's roads, noting that the 2016 Amador pavement condition index stood at 56 out of 100 was the 13th lowest in California and that the index fell further to 51 in 2017. The Grand Jury makes a number of recommendations to improvement maintenance of roads and facilities, including the selling off of unused county property, the consolidation of county departments into less buildings, and ending furloughs for county employees. The Grand Jury also takes a look at the county's child protective services and it's foster care system. This report presents a mixed picture, praising child protective services workers for their dedication to an important, difficult and emotional draining job, while also noting communication problems between CPS, the foster care providers and foster parents the agencies addressed in the Civil Grand Jury Report have 90 days to offer a formal response to the findings and recommendations in this report.
