[Marin County] Letter to the editor: Grassroots organizations can help aging population

Blog note: this letter references a 2007 grand jury report.
Thank you for printing Matt Levin’s Marin Voice (Data on seniors online scope of state’s challenge, May 27). It’s vital to remind people of the demographic reality our communities face. Adults over 65 are the fastest growing segment of the population in California, with Marin County leading the pack. While the majority of seniors choose to age at home, they face the inordinate cost of home health care, limited access to public transportation, and growing isolation.
The 2007 Grand Jury report titled “Aging in Marin: An Essay in Uneasiness,” was one of numerous articles and studies sounding the alarm about the insufficiency of resources and programs to meet the diverse needs of an aging population. In an attempt to fill the gap, grassroots’ groups like Marin Villages, with its seven satellite local villages, have sprung up across the country. Volunteers assist members in getting to appointments, shopping, taking care of household tasks, or simply sharing a cup of tea. They provide opportunities for building friendships and connection to community by offering activities from coffees, luncheons and happy hours, to book and Boggle groups, as well as talks on topics of importance to seniors.
Grassroots’ organizations accomplish a lot with a little, but they can’t do it alone. Membership dues usually cover less than 50% of operating budgets that have to absorb rent as well as staff salaries. It’s critical that local leaders and benefactors include monies in their budgets and giving plans to help organizations like Marin Villages grow and expand to meet our imminent shortfalls. Working together we can create the communities we all deserve all deserve as we age.
