Budget cutbacks across San Joaquin County “threaten the ability to ensure public safety,” according to an “informational report” issued by the grand jury Tuesday.
The grand jury report investigated budget impacts on the administration of justice, finding that staff reductions have resulted in the elimination of intervention programs and proactive policing. It points to above-average violent crime rates, particular in Stockton.
The report also says out that many jurisdictions are “approaching the reductions in personnel, operations and budget limitations in a constructive manner.”
The grand jury notes that ensuring public safety in the future is “unknown and uncertain.” It did not make any recommendations.
