SAN DIEGO - A grand jury report
issued in May said downtown San Diego needs more public restrooms, so a local
think tank is trying to address that need but the problem is nobody wants the
bathroom by them.
"Access to sanitation and
clean water is not only a basic human right, but it also serves a greater
public health and personal health need," explained Heather Pollock,
executive director of Girls Think Tank.
The Girls Think Tank is trying
to raise $80,000 by November 10 to fund a mobile bathroom, complete with two
toilets and two showers. They have $12,500 to go.
Pollock believes her group's
plan provides more than just a shower. It also provides an opportunity to end
poverty.
"So without access to a
clean shower and being able to look presentable and go in for an interview,
these people are unable to transition off of the streets," Pollock said.
Unfortunately, no one wants to
see a line forming on their way to the ballpark, outside their pricey apartment
or their business.
Loris Compiano, owner of Rustic
Meatballs on 10th Avenue, told 10News while he doesn't want the showers on his
street, he said there is a serious need for them.
"As a business owner, we
do have a lot of issues with people getting in the restaurants going straight
to the restroom and using the restroom to take showers," he explained.
