I
was dismayed by the Sept. 10, 2015, headline insinuating that the
Fairfield-Suisun School District paid $10,000 for a one-hour talk with a
consultant.
While
that may have been the experience of Missouri, it is unfair to smear the
dedicated work of the governing board, superintendent and staff to sell
newspapers.
I
hope members of the Fairfield-Suisun learning community will take the time to
read both the insightful and complimentary report of our civil grand jury,
which recognizes the difficulty of implementing the unfunded state mandate to
modify the behavior of students in avoidance of suspension and expulsion.
Capturing
Kids Hearts is one of the programs selected by the district to meet this
mandate. As indicated in the district’s response to the civil grand jury
report, significant progress has been made through use of the program.
Our
school district’s annual budget is approximately $117 million per
year. The expenditure of $125,000 to aid in complying with the state Board of
Education mandate through the Capturing Kids Hearts program is both reasonable
and fiscally prudent.
You
owe the school district an apology.
