The San
Mateo County Board of Supervisors agreed to move forward with developing a restaurant placarding
system on Tuesday, supporting the findings of a grand jury report earlier this year.
The report
recommended the county implement a system that would require restaurants to
post easy-to-read scoring placards in the window and assess fines if they fail
to do so. It also found inaccurate and incomplete inspection information on the
county website.
The report
cited an NBC Bay Area Investigation last year which exposed Peninsula and San
Francisco restaurants skirting laws requiring that they display up their
lengthy inspection report.
The new
placarding system would summarize that information in the form of a score or
color and require that be posted in plain view.
The county
tells NBC Bay Area that more details will be available on the new system in the
coming weeks.
