[Los Angeles County] Signal Hill Police Department detention facility receives ‘outstanding’ rating from civil grand jury

The County of Los Angeles Civil Grand Jury gave the Signal Hill Police Department (SHPD) detention facility an “Outstanding” rating for the station’s cleanliness and efficiency, in its annual report after inspecting the facility.
The report noted that the facility, which was inspected on Sept. 26, 2014, was clean, and that the staff was courteous and polite.
“Opened in January 2013, this is probably one of the newest police
and detention facilities built in Los Angeles County,” said SHPD Chief Michael S. Langston. “The decision to build and fund this facility was part of the City Council’s commitment to public safety within the city of Signal Hill, and to ensure that we operate a safe and constitutional detention facility, even one used for temporary holding purposes as this one is.”
In addition to the Civil Grand Jury’s inspection, local detention
facilities are regularly inspected by the Board of Community Corrections, which establishes minimum standards for: local adult and juvenile detention facilities; the County Health Department, which inspects facilities and sets food standards; and the local fire department, which conducts an annual fire safety inspection.
