HERCULES -- The
Rodeo-Hercules Fire District Board of Directors rejected key findings of a
Contra Costa County Grand Jury report that criticized its handling of a new
contract for its fire chief and its adherence to state open meeting laws.
In separate 3-2 votes
Wednesday, the board authorized a formal response to the grand jury that
challenges its findings and criticizes its investigation for not interviewing
all of the board members.
Board members Beth Bartke,
John Mills and Raemona Williams voted in favor of the strongly-worded response.
Board members Bill Prather and Ernie Wheeler voted against it.
The board came
under fire last year for agreeing to a new contract for its fire chief that
significantly increased his benefits, made it difficult to terminate him, and
required that he not be subject to "undue oversight."
