The Nevada County Civil Grand
Jury on Friday released its latest report examining the dangers of illegal
campfires.
According to the report, the
grand jury looked at the county’s fire conditions, which have been affected by
the state’s multi-year drought and last year’s dry winter, and spoke with
representatives from several public agencies, including the Grass Valley Police
and Fire departments and the California Department of Forestry and Fire
Protection, to assess the risk posed by illegal campfires.
The report found that the
threat of illegal campfires is a “major public safety issue,” and significant
funds and resources are being committed by local agencies to respond to those
fires. The report concluded that the GVPD is being proactive about dealing with
transient fire issues.
The report advised citizens to
report any illegal campfires they observe.
